  10.   This is the regularly posted list of archive servers that contain files
  11. related in any way to Acorn computers, i.e. the Atom, BBC, Electron,
  12. Archimedes and R-series, and maybe some even rarer types of machines.
  13. Mainly it's about the Archimedes, though.
  14.   This list is maintained by Gerben Vos <gpvos@cs.vu.nl>. People in the UK
  15. may want to try the address gpvos@solo.cs.vu.nl . Please mail any updates or
  16. remarks to me.

  18.   There is also a list with answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the
  19. Acorn newsgroups. It is called the "Comp.Sys.Acorn FAQ List Posting", and the
  20. maintainer is Philip Banks <banks_p@kosmos.wcc.govt.nz>. You should be able to
  21. find it at the same place where you found this article.
  22.   One of these places is the archive site rtfm.mit.edu (18.70.0.224), which
  23. stores many FAQs in the directory pub/usenet/news.answers . The name under
  24. which a FAQ is archived appears in the Archive-name line at the top of the
  25. article. This list is archived as acorn/archives, the FAQ has as name
  26. acorn/faq . There's also a mail server on that machine. You can send an e-mail
  27. message to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu containing, without the quotes, the text
  28. "send usenet/news.answers/acorn/archives" in the message body.
  29.  
  30.   Now back to this list. For every server, the name and the type of files it
  31. contains is indicated, along with its numeric address in the case of Internet
  32. ftp servers and Janet pads, and the email address of the maintainer, if known.
  33.   Below that follows a list of the directories to look for with a short
  34. description of their contents. The Newcastle server is an exception to this
  35. rule, since it has only one big flat directory.
  36.  
  37.   Below the main list is a short section which tells you how to use some
  38. services on networks you aren't directly connected to, e.g. Internet ftp from
  39. Bitnet or Janet, and Janet connection from the Internet.
  40.  
  41.   When requesting files from servers, always try to use a server that is as
  42. near as possible to you. And keep in mind that the people running these
  43. machines are doing you a favour, so please don't abuse or over-use their
  44. services.

  46. Changes since some arbitrary time in the past:
  47. - The Manchester archive, uts.mcc.ac.uk, will close down on 5th July.
  48. - Added walton.maths.tcd.ie, a small archive.
  49. - The Sydney server, metro.ucc.su.oz.au, seems to have been closed down.

  302.   Don't be fooled by the short listing of this archive; it has been a close
  303.   companion to the Acorn newsgroups for many years and often has the latest
  304.   versions. It contains public domain software for ARM based systems
  305.   (Archimedes, A3000, Rxxx etc), mainly put together from Usenet postings and
  306.   private submissions.

  308.   The info server is currently in danger of falling victim to its own
  309.   popularity (it's mailing out over a gigabyte per month at the moment).
  310.   Use an alternative, if possible, and coordinate your requests with others.

  370. If you can't use Internet ftp, there are servers which can do it for you.
  371. To find out how they work, send them a message containing just the word help.
